When you cross the age of 40, you may start to feel like your best days are behind you.

Let me tell you, it doesn’t have to be that way.

You can embrace aging gracefully by slowing it down and even reversing it. When you change your mindset about what aging means and feels like, you can awaken with a renewed sense of confidence.

Unfortunately many anti-aging treatments advertised don’t hold their promise.

Nature has many gifts which can help your skin look and feel younger. However, when practised daily, these eight anti-aging hacks will give your skin a new lease of life…

1. Keep Your Skin Hydrated

When your skin is hydrated, it plumps up, looks more vibrant and is less prone to wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid that’s present in the skin can hold water and this makes it look healthier and less prone to wrinkles.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day – ideally 8 glasses of purified or filtered water is essential for good cell and skin health.

If you find drinking water a challenge, try adding slices of lemon or lime to a glass to make it more palatable.

2. Get Enough Sleep

Rest is essential for good health. During deep sleep, hormones such as Human Growth Hormone (HGH) are released that are involved in the repair and restoration of the body. Experts believe that as much as 75% of HGH is released during sleep.

Levels of HGH decline with age and lack of sleep can cause side effects such as weight gain; reduced muscle mass, lowered cognitive or physical performance, and other age-related effects such as thinning hair or an increased risk of heart disease or diabetes. For best anti-aging results, aim to between 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.

3. Sweat Daily

Making exercise a regular part of your daily routine is essential for good health. But many people don’t know that regular aerobic exercise could stop the biological clock and delay the aging process by up to 12 years according to researchers.

Exercises such as jogging, cycling, or regular aerobic workouts can all slow down aging and even reverse the decline in muscle power, balance and co-ordination during later life.

Sweating is one of the best ways to remove toxins from the body as this can slow down the aging process and the process that makes skin age more quickly. The more you sweat, the more you delay the aging process.

Choose an activity you love such as jogging, yoga, swimming and aim to do it at least 3-4 times a week, Anything that raises your heart rate and encourages you to sweat is excellent for cell health.

4. Use This Quick Coffee Face Mask

Coffee is more than just a beverage to wake you up, it’s also a powerful stimulant that contains many anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. Coffee can protect the skin against free radical damage, while leaving your complexion smooth and glowing.

Prepare this simple Coffee Face Mask recipe for best results.

Ingredients: Take ½ cup of ground organic coffee beans, ½ cup of organic and unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 cup of unsweetened whole milk (or almond milk), 1 tbsp of lemon juice for dry skin and 1 tbsp of honey (if you have oily skin).

Instructions: Into a bowl, mix the finely ground coffee beans with the cocoa powder. Add in the milk and stir to create a paste. If a thicker paste is required, use less milk. Mix in the honey and lemon juice. Apply to the skin and leave to dry for up to 20 minutes. Wash off and store within the fridge for up to 3 days.

If you have dark circles, consider mixing the finely ground coffee beans with milk or olive oil to form a paste. Apply this to the under eye area once daily. Allow this to dry and then rinse off.

Caffeine promotes healthy circulation and decreases inflammation that can decrease dark circles and eye bags. For a quick scrub with extra exfoliation, applying this mixture in circular motions for 1-2 minutes is advised, leaving it to dry. Rinse clean before towel drying.

5. Take Your Antioxidants

Eating plenty of antioxidant rich foods such as blueberries, blackberries and strawberries can help to boost your cellular health, reducing signs of aging. Antioxidants inhibit free radical damage and protect cells against free radical damage.

You can also get the benefits of antioxidants directly onto your skin by creating a face mask and blending berries together with a drop or two of argan oil.

6. Repair Skin with CoQ10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is found in every cell in the body. It’s used to produce energy that the body needs for cell growth and maintenance.

Working as an antioxidant, CoQ10 protects the body from damage caused by harmful molecules. CoQ10 is naturally found in small quantities in certain foods but is best taken as a supplement.

Coenzymes play a vital role in helping enzymes digest food and protecting the heart and skeletal muscles.

CoQ10 boosts energy levels and encourages a speedy recovery from exercise. Some studies have also suggested that CoQ10 may boost the immune system and may be a useful treatment for people with cancer.

7. Try Intermittent Fasting

The word ‘fasting’ may sound like a punishment but learning to go for prolonged periods without food could prevent premature aging. According to research from scientists at the University of Chicago, “Intermittent fasting has been shown to delay the development of disorders leading to death”.

Fasting gives the body a break from digesting food so it can focus on healing instead. Intermittent fasting decreases total body inflammation that can otherwise contribute to the aging process. It decreases blood pressure and LDL cholesterol, improves the immune system and can help to normalize the hunger hormone known as ghrelin.

By raising human growth hormone (HGH) levels, intermittent fasting is excellent practice to add to any anti-aging diet and lifestyle regime.

8. Practice Face Exercises

Facial exercises are based off ancient acupressure techniques and are a simple way of using muscle contraction and resistance to reduce and prevent frown lines and wrinkles.

Following a dedicated face exercise routine on a daily basis can lift and tone the facial muscles, reduce sagging and give you the appearance of a  natural ‘facelift’.

Facial exercises can give you an eye lift, natural brow lift, reduce dark circles and eye bags, firm sagging cheeks, create a firmer jaw and neckline and even plump your lips!
