I’ve always been a believer in laughter as one of the best kinds of medicine. A smile can say a thousand words and yet the downside of this joyful activity is that it can leave an undesirable impression on your face.

Laughter lines, otherwise known as nasolabial folds are the deep creases either side of the nose that extend down past the mouth. At their worst, these ‘jowls’ can add years to your face, making you look tired and miserable.

Thankfully these lines have not yet managed to show on my thirty-something face but I’m dreading the day they make a prominent appearance. That’s why I decided to research into how I can prevent them from occurring. I want to make my smile the main attraction of my face – not the laughter lines.

My research into this topic took me to analyzing natural methods that can make the biggest impact for softening the appearance of laughter lines.

Here is what I found works the best…

 

1. Facial Exercises

I found this simple technique known as the ‘Smile Smoother’ by Face Yoga expert, Danielle Collins. This facial exercise can tighten and tone the muscles between the nose and the mouth.

To start with, hide the teeth with the lips to make an ‘O’ shape with the mouth. Smile widely, keeping the teeth hidden. Repeat six times. Hold the smile shape and place one index finger on the chin. Move the jaw up and down, gently tilting the head back. Relax and repeat twice more.

This second exercise can work the mouth and cheeks: This technique can strengthen and tighten the muscles between the nose and the mouth.

Take your tongue and press into one side of your mouth. Try and hold for 10-15 seconds; pressing the tongue into the side of the mouth. Repeat on the other side, so you feel the muscle working in that area.

 

2. Use an Avocado Mask

Avocados are a unique anti-aging food because they are able to deeply nourish inside cell structures, entering the mitochondria and activating energy production. This allows cells to function properly, even if they are being constantly attacked by free radicals.

Damaged free radical cells play a direct role in cell aging and eating avocados or using them on skin daily is a good way to prevent free radical damage from occurring.

 

3. Sleep On Your Back

It may be more comfortable, but repeatedly sleeping on the same side places constant pressure on your face. Eventually this produces unwanted sleep lines or laughter lines.

Sleeping on your back is the best way to ensure you don’t apply any pressure on your face, causing deep nasolabial lines to form from the nose to the mouth.

Learning to sleep on your back may be challenging at first but over time you will adapt and get used to this position. This is one of the best ways to prevent deep jowl lines from forming.

Sleeping on a good pillow with the right face and neck support can also help to prevent premature wrinkles in the nasolabial folds and neck lines from developing.

 

4. Drink Plenty Of Water

Staying hydrated is essential for boosting collagen and elastin in the skin. Drinking at least 6-8 glasses of water a day is highly recommended to stay hydrated and promote good skin health.

When skin is dehydrated, it’s possible to experience symptoms of  dryness, irritation, flakiness and prematurely aged skin.

Wrinkles form when elastin fibers wear thin and are unable to snap back into shape. The deeper the lines and wrinkles appear, the more dehydrated the skin is and the more water the body needs to stay healthy.

 

5. ‘The Giraffe’ Facial Exercise

This simple exercise can give a natural lift to the jowls and neck area. Looking straight ahead, place the fingertips at the bottom of the neck. Stroke the skin lightly in a downward motion, ensuring the head is tilted back.

Place the head down to the chest and repeat this move twice more. Finally, jut the lower lip outwards as much as possible. Pull the corners of the mouth down, placing fingertips on the collarbone, the chin pointed downwards. Hold for four deep breaths. Release.

 

Make These Anti-Aging ‘Laws’ Part Of Your Lifestyle

All of these tips are best followed as part of a healthy lifestyle plan for successful results. They are accumulative and so, the effects build over time to enable you to maintain a youthful appearance.

Some people may be content to let their laughter lines show – claiming them to be ‘signs of a life well lived’ but I don’t believe this one bit.

You can still enjoy your life and retain your youthful looks by taking good care of your skin now. I’d much rather preserve my youthful looks as much as possible by following these natural tips – so that my future face really will have something to smile about.
